There is an eligibility criterion to follow based on the guiding
principles of IL. Here are some of the keys to the success of forming
an Independent Living effective in Nepal.
• Gain the support of persons with disabilities, community and/or
organizations by sharing information about IL.
• Verify gaps in service provisions through access collaborative
community consultation processes.
• Remain flexible to best assess the needs of the various groups
of people with disabilities. Build a community based consumer controlled
Steering Committee which can eventually involve into an elected consumer
controlled Board of Directors.
• Set out a plan which does not duplicate services, but instead
endeavors to address community gaps and needs as identified by people
with disabilities in innovative, collaborative, and strategic ways.
As communities begin planning for an IL Center and reach the stage
where a Steering Committee is formed, ILC facilitates the exchange
of support and information. The existing network of ILC plays an important
role in this regard. In addition, ILC helps groups to find opportunities
to develop skills and knowledge of the local stakeholders in the community.
ILC recently developed its Citizenship Engagement Tool which helps
stakeholders become knowledgeable about community consultation.
